Balkenkreuz
World War II saw the coming of age of the fighter aircraft. This piece draws inspiration from one of the most advanced fighters of the era, the Messerschmitt Bf 109 (also known as the Me 109). Considered the workhorse and backbone of the Luftwaffe’s fighter force, it first went into service in 1937 and continued fighting until 1945. The three top-scoring German fighter aces of WWII flew the Bf 109. This detailed piece portrays the scars and damage accumulated over such an existence. Besides the heavy weathering, this panel carries three bullet holes raked across the insignia.
